Biography
After a life that was dominated by moving houses, exchanging one country for the other, packing and unpacking boxes I have finally found my home in Cape Town, South Africa. I have been here since 2004, after I left The Netherlands for a temporary position at a local newspaper The Cape Times. When my contract at the newspaper drew to a close, I decided to to see if I could make it as a freelance writer. Two years have passed since I made that decision, and I must say: So far so good!

At the moment I am writing for various publications, both South African and International. The include Metro Holland (Dutch national daily newspaper), The Big Issue (South African magazine), Portfolio & Open Skies (in-flight magazines of Emirates), Het Financiële Dagblad (Dutch financial newspaper), Interpress Service, and once and a while I contribute to the Independent Community newspapers (Cape Town).

I have also done work for De Gazet van Antwerpen (Belgian regional newspaper), Cape Times, CapeTownMagazine.com (Online travel magazine), and Spits (Dutch daily newspaper).
My connection to Africa
The foundation of my connection with Africa was laid during my childhood.

I was three years old when my parents and me exchanged our flat in The Netherlands for Dondo, Angola. Barely two years later, we were transferred to Rwanda. To me, Rwanda is a very special place and one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Although I have not been there for over 18 years, and despite the fact it is not the same country that we left behind in the late 1980's, Rwanda is still a place I call home. One of them, at least.

My connection, fascination and love for the African continent remained strong, even after we moved back to The Netherlands. Moving to - and remaining in - South Africa is a direct result of this. An interesting detail is that my parents will be joining me next year. Well, sort of. In a few months time, they will be moving 'up the road', in the DRC.
