My testimony on Voice of Africa
- Posted on Wednesday 10 December 2008 - 12:57Daniel Nana Aforo, VoicesofAfrica alumnus, Accra, GhanaI start my testimony by narrating to you an incident that happened to me at the beginning of the Voices of African Project. On 14th August, I went to cover an Annual General Meeting of a Rural Bank in the Ga West Municipality of Amasaman, suburb of Accra . I approached the General Manager of the bank for an interview using my mobile phone, and in the process of the interview I heard a scream from my back "what do you think you are doing, how can you take mobile phone for an interview?"Loading video...The shout was from veteran journalist from the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, describing me as a charlatan which drew the attention of the gathering. It took some people who could attest for my integrity and fortunately someone brought his laptop with an internet connection. After opening the site of Africa News, everyone then believed my story.
Well, the problems are that most of our people do not know the use of the mobile phone in producing video, news gathering among others. Barely 6 months that the Voices of African Project was introduced in Ghana , have I been able to upload stories which have been received with much appreciation. Through the use of the phone, I have uploaded videos and stories from Sports, Politics, Economy, Nature, and Entertainment.
One of the stories I did for a ghetto boxer was received with quick responses from the readership and one boxing supporter want to assist the boxer with equipment. I did a story on blind musician urging African artists to use local instruments, story on pito a local brewed beer and many more.
Our camera cannot compete with the sophisticated competitors from the BBC, CNN, Aljazeera, Reuters but we want to use our own small way of telling stories in a picture and video followed with a txt. Most people who see their stories on the internet after publications feel very delighted and would be grateful like to spread our wings to bring out many hidden news and events.
African stories could well be investigated and written by African themselves hence the need for corporate firms to assist African Interactive to provide mouthpiece for the poor, vulnerable and less privileged in the society.
