Zambia's Supreme Court has set March 11 as the date for ruling in a case in which defeated Patriotic Front President, Michael Sata, is seeking for a recount of votes cast in the October 30 presidential elections. The court was expected to rule on the matter on Tuesday but had to adjourn to a later date.

Sata’s lawyers Bonaventure Mutale and Winter Kabimba have argued that the presidential vote to replace late president Levy Mwanawasa who died in a French hospital were married by a number of anomalies which raises serious doubts of the election results.

Kabimba has urged the court to order a recount as pleaded by Sata, “Because failure to do so will render the presidential petition a mere academic exercise”.

But in response, Solicitor General Dominic Sichinga has urged the court to dismiss the claims by Sata for a recount with costs as it has no merit upon which it would warrant the court to order a vote recount.

Deputy Chief Justice Irene Mambilima has set March 11 as the date for ruling.
