Zambia: Africa's deepest mine outdoored
- Posted on Tuesday 20 April 2010 - 16:50Sanday Chongo Kabange, AfricaNews reporter in Lusaka, ZambiaZambia's copper output is to increase significantly following the commissioning of the Konkola Deep Mining Project (KDMP) in the country's mining region of Copperbelt. Zambian President, Rupiah Banda has indicated that the commissioning of the KDMP will increase metal production in Africa's largest copper producer.
Banda said in Chilabombwe region of the Copperbelt that the KDMP will also create thousands of jobs for Zambians.
Indian High Commissioner to Zambia, Ashok Kumar challenged more Indian firms to emulate Vendanta Resources Plc to invest in the southern African country and double up Vedanta's US$1.6 million greenfield investment in Zambia.
The Vedanta Resources operated by Konkola Deep Mining Project will increase copper production from 2 million to 7.5 million tonnes per year and extend the mine's life span by 23 more years.
Mining is Zambia's economic mainstay and close to 90% of the country's annual earnings is derived from metal exports.
