What I remember Nyerere for
- Posted on Tuesday 4 November 2008 - 14:33Deo Simba, VoicesofAfrica mobile reporter in Dar es Salaam, TanzaniaPeople have different reasons for which they remember their former leaders. Tanzanians commemorated the 9th anniversary of the death of founder of their country, Julius Nyerere (1922 - 1999). Here are some of the reasons why Tanzanians still remember Nyerere.Loading video...1. Ibrahim Kaswa: He was a straightforward leader - in the sense that he took his duties and responsibilities seriously, and as such he did not entertain irresponsible leaders.
2. Bibiana Msuya: Nyerere was a diligent person, he devouted his entire life to the people of Tanzania, Africa and the voiceless around the world.
3. Danford Mfikwa: Nyerere was strong in figthing against graft and corruption. He wanted the national cake to be shared equally among the people. This was the core of his socialism "Ujamaa".
Today corrupt people walk free from cells, that is, even when they are known and it can be proved beyond reasonable doubt that they are corrupt. 4. Nyerere left a legal of leadership succession in Tanzania. He set the example by voluntarily stepping down from power.
He speaks of the Presidential office as being responsible to the entire country and not just to one's political party. Truly speaking, today Africa still yearns for leaders like Nyerere, Kaunda, Nkrumah, Lumumba, Machel, Mandela, Masire, Chissano and others of their calibre and level of commitment. May God bless Africa.
