WC 2010: ``Feel it, Ghana is here``
- Posted on Monday 14 June 2010 - 08:32Walter Wilson Nana, Africanews reporter in Buea, Cameroon"Feel It! Ghana Is Here!" was the inscription on a placard of an excited Ghanaian supporter carried at the Loftus Versfeld 50,000 capacity stadium in Pretoria. The four-time African champions had just dazed the Serbians with a 1-0 victory in the 84th minute at the ongoing World Cup on African soil.
Striker Asamoah Gyan beautifully netted a deserved penalty awarded to Ghana by the Argentine referee, Héctor Walter Baldassi, who saw Serbian defender, Usmanovic, pull the ball with his hand in the 18 metre box.
Many observers have quickly described the victory of the Black Stars as an African victory in the 2010 South African World Cup campaign. In the African World Cup opener Friday, there was a pulsating and thrilling one all tie between the Bafana Bafana and Mexico.
In the second African appearance in the tournament, Saturday, the Super Eagles of Nigeria lost to the double world champion, Albiceleste of Argentina, coached by the maverick Diego Armando Maradona. In the third African outing, an unfortunate Desert Foxes of Algeria lost their opener against Slovenia. However, there is still some hope in the horizon for Nigeria and Algeria.
This hope has been rekindled by the Black Stars as they mesmerized their counterparts from Serbia.
Fans of African football across the world have been quick to say that, the Ghanaian shining performance should be a foretaste for the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, who get on the green turf in Bloemfontein, Monday, June 14 against the Bleu Samurais of Japan and on Tuesday, June 15, when the Elephants of Ivory Coast take on the star-studded team of Portugal.
Speaking to journalists at the press centre in the Polokwane Stadium in Pretoria, Ghanaian striker, Gyan said; “This is what Ghanaians have been waiting from us. We say thank God.”
