Uganda: Soldiers arrested after murder
- Posted on Friday 23 November 2007 - 13:26Solomon Jesse, AfricaNews reporter in Kampala, UgandaTwo Ugandan soldiers attached to the 17th battalion at Kanaba in Kisoro District were arrested in Kabale on alleged charges of beating to death a man by the names of Rukundo Apollo .
The officer in charge of investigations at Kabale police station, John Bulega on Thursday confirmed this to the press. He identified soldiers as Pte .Swaibu Masereka and Pte .Mathias Ngarombo.
Bulenga also named other suspects in the murder as Yonasani Muguhi, LC1chairman Karegyere Cell, John Kwizera , brother to the deceased, Stephen Musinguzi and his uncle Elias Bunyenyezi. He said the incident took place on Tuesday at Karegyere trading centre near Kabale-Kisoro border.
The sub-county chief for Muko where the incident took place, Nicholas Asiimwe reported the matter to Murole police in Kabale and the suspects were arrested.
''The motive of the murder is not yet established but what we have gathered shows the accused had a family wrangle with his relatives'', Mr Bulega said.
The police suspect the relatives connived with the soldiers to kill the deceased. “We are charging all the accused persons with murder”, Bulega said, adding that after investigations are completed the suspects will be taken to court.
The murderers claimed that the victim was a thief in the area but other local leaders defended the suspect that he had reformed. Bulega attributed the increased murder cases in Kabale district to drug abuse and alcoholism. He said that a radio programme is to be set up to sensitise the general public on crime.
