progress despite drought in southern Ethiopia
- Just returned from 3 days of travel around Awassa in southern Ethiopia. One impressive programme is the Targeted Supplementary Feeding and Extended Outreach Strategy shared programme between two Government ministries, WFP and Unicef.
The achievements of this joint programme. Health workers from the Government, backed by Unicef, screen for individual cases of malnutrition every 6 months. The recipients are children under 5 and pregnant and lactating mothers whose upper arm measurement shows they are malnourished.
They get a ration card and then an individual ration. Lots of recipients and the women Food Distribution Agents said the Government (DPPS) and WFP handout of corn-soya blend…
