Togo: Lome stadium banned
- Posted on Wednesday 28 January 2009 - 12:53Walter Wilson Nana, AfricaNews reporter in Buea, CameroonThe Disciplinary and Homologation Committee of the world football governing body, FIFA, has banned the Lome Stadium of Togo from international activities.
The directive follows investigations into violence that erupted during a World Cup/ACN qualifying series between Togo and Mali.
The FIFA suspension decision states that in one of the preliminary matches pitting Togo against Mali at the Lome stadium, violence erupted, leaving two Malian players and 60 supporters wounded.
FIFA has directed that the upcoming opener of the third and last phase of the ACN/World Cup qualifiers engaging Togo against Cameroon, billed for Saturday, March 28, has been moved to the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra, Ghana.
Our reporter said the heavy sledge hammer of FIFA has fallen on Togo as a warning to the other countries still in the race to get an African Cup of Nations and World Cup ticket to do so in the spirit of fair play and not in violence.
