The world comes to Nairobi!

  1.   Nairobi has been the centre of international media attention as The World Social Forum hit the city from the 21st to the 27th of January 2007. The city has been buzzing with activities, from people demonstrating on the streets to music festivals. The massage is clear ANOTHER WORLD IS POSSIBLE! Social activists from all corners of the world are joining together to shout this massage and consciousise those who are ignorant about social reform movements and ideas. This gigantic gathering in Nairobi has not only brightened up the city, it has also brought serious financial benefits. With over 15 thousand participants, all hotels are full, restaurants are fully booked every night, buses and taxis are working over time, local Masai market goodies are selling at triple the normal price, even ordinary Kenyans are accommodating these enthusiastic “comrades” at a high price. Being a South African this “get rich now and fast” phenomena that comes with  huge international gatherings such as this, only makes me think of the world cup 2010 that will be hosted by South Africa. I mean those Kenyans that are complaining about the traffic or sudden change in bus fee [ and believe me there has been a few complainants] cannot imagine what mayhem South Africa will be in that year, everybody is already making a plan on how to “get rich and fast” from world cup 2010, its absolute madness!  The bottom line is that, it is really about time that the rest of the world focuses their attention on the African continent, whether it’s the world social forum or the world cup. Africa deserves the attention not only when there is a war, famine or some disastrous issue. There is interesting and wonderful events that can take place on the continent and yes these events do come with financial benefits and the reality is that Africa needs all the money she can get. So lets all [and not just the politicians] get rich because another world IS possible.
