UNICEF provides relief to children in Somalia
Despite the many other challenges the Somali children face, they are currently battling the effects of drought following the failure of the Deyr rains which normally occur between Octobers to January. According to Robert Kihara, the Communication Officer of UNICEF Somalia, they are working to provide emergency relief services to over 900, 000 people across the country. - Drought-affected areas include central south Somalia and the disputed region (between Punt land and Somaliland) of Sool, Sanaag and UNICEF is providing relief in water, sanitation, hygiene, health, nutrition and education To support these children and their families.

After approval from the Medical Ethics Committee this week, Rwandan Project Ubuzima will spend the next three years conducting a research on an Anti-HIV gel for women which is part of the microbicide medical products and is believed to reduce the risk of HIV infection among women. - The use of microbicides to fight HIV infection was first embraced last year by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS during an international AIDS conference in Vienna.

The Central Bank of Rwanda (BNR) has started implementing a new system, the Rwanda Integrated Payments Processing System (RIPPS), geared towards making payment systems in the country efficient and reliable. - RIPPS comprises of three main components, including an Automated Clearing House (ACH- a netting system), a Real Time Gross Settlement Transfer System (RTGS) and a Central Securities Depository (CSD).
Francois Kanimba, the central bank Governor, said that the new system provides integrated facilities for clearing and settlement of all interbank electronic payments, irrespective of their value and level of urgency.
