Kampala: Management in communities’ hands
Kampala's numerous slums like elsewhere in Africa are characterized by inadequate structures and services like sanitation, water supply, drainage, solid waste disposal facilities and roads as well as poor housing and environmental and housing conditions. - The Kampala integrated environment planning and management project also known as KIEMP project was conceived in 2002 but took off in 2007 aimed at responding to the rapid population growth in the capital city. Three slums were the first to benefit from this project these included Kisenyi II, Makindye and Bwaise.

These drums are imported from very many places but mostly from Kenya and some from the Uganda especially from mattress making factories. These drums contain toxic chemicals that are harmful to the community at large and toxic to the people who work on them. - The drums are cleaned in order to get rid of the chemical. This is done by burning another chemical inside the drum, placed on old car tyres. The result is a huge smoke of black smoke that pollutes the air and exposes residents to various health hazards. The chicken intestine delicacy also known as 'myenda bye nkoko ebisike' is common amongst the people from the northern and eastern Uganda. In the Mengo Kisenyi slum in the Capital Kampala, the Karamajongs, a pastoralist community from the semi-arid North, brought their chicken intestine eating traditions. - Asiru, 18, a Karamojong girl said that this delicacy is more delicious than the grasshopper delicacy also known as ‘nsene’, which is commonly associated with the Buganda region.
