Kenya: Prime Minister hospitalized
- Kenyan Prime Minister's Raila Odinga has been hospitalized at the Nairobi hospital following a serious state of exhaustion and tiredness. The Prime Minister is known to be an energetic and restless workaholic, diplomat and politician. He complained of general exhaustion after officiating the cleanup of the Nairobi dam on Monday. The doctors performed a minor head surgery to relieve the pressure that had formed up around the brain, which could have been caused when the PM bumped his head on his car a few weeks ago.Dr Livingstone Oluoch-Olunya, a neurosurgeon, said the PM was responding well to the operation and declared him fit for his administrative duties. However, the doctors have rec…Kenya: Journey to a new constitution gets a setback
- The campaign for a new constitution fronted by Kenya's coalition government of President Mwai Kibaki and Premier Raila Odinga yesterday got one of its biggest shocks yet.A three judge-bench of the constitutional court ruled that the inclusion of Kadhi's courts in the current constitution was discriminatory and illegal.According to the judges, justices Joseph Nyamu, Roselyne Wendoh and Mathew Anyara Emukule, this inclusion game more recognition to one religion, while marginalizing the others. They based their ruling on the fact that the state and religion are two separate entities. The ruling appeared controversial in that it comes at a time when Kenyans are gearing themselves for…Kenya pleads with Egypt
- The Kenyan Prime Minister, Right Honorable Raila Odinga went on an official tour to Egypt in a bid to talk President Hosni Mubarak into signing the Nile treaty that will allow equal use of the Nile water by the riparian states that are found along the Nile basin. The Premier appealed to the President to sign the Cooperative Framework Agreement that is meant to transform the Nile Basin Initiative into a Permanent Nile River Commission to manage the water resource on behalf of the Nile basin states. Formerly, Egypt and the Sudan have collectively been in charge of 94% of the water in the river, leaving the other states to share the remainder, which the other states termed as unfair. The…Kenya: Father 'sacrifices' son

As of now SONU has been disbanded and a committee put in place to perform its duties until April…Mysterious inclusion in the Kenyan Draft constitution.
- The Nation woke up on the morning of 12th May to hear that someone had mischievously added a dangerous clause into the proposed constitution that Kenyans are expected to vote either in favour of or against in three months time.It allows the government to deny people any rights deemed to them if they are likely to hurt 'National security'.The inclusion, which was denied by the Attorney General, Hon.Amos Wako, is found in the current constitution and has been the cause and reason used by former governments to detain people without trial. Most recently in 2005, one of the major TV stations was attacked by government paid bandits when it was claimed that it was about to broadcast i…The bumpy ride to a new constitution in Kenya
- By Timothy Kemei The Church in Kenya has completely refused to budge on its decision not to support the new constitution. Its still claiming that there are a number of amendments that need to be made before they ask their flock to vote for the draft. Not even a meeting with President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga could convince them otherwise. The secretary -general of the National Council of Churches of Kenya, Canon Karanja however said that more talks were under plans and assured Kenyans that were still going to continue with the negotiation to avoid a standoff with the government during the referendum. They requested that the referendum be pushed forward to give time t…Where did the Kenyan CDF money go ?
- The introduction of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) in 2003 was hyped as one of the noblest of plans that would ensure that public funds will be brought closer to the people to fund projects in individual constituencies and better the lives of Kenyans. However it appears that more public funds are finding their way into the pockets of the Members than into the proposed projects. The only proof of the disbursement of the kitty are some scrappy and shoddy work which are claimed to have used millions of shillings. According to a report released yesterday by a Tuesday by a lobby group, National Taxpayers Association, more than Kshs.445 million are unaccounted for.At this rate, it app…Kenya's constitution
- The Kenyan parliament finally passed the proposed constitution without any amendments on it.The draft is now in the office of the Attorney general,Hon.Amos Wako, who is due to publish it in the Kenya gazette.Within the next three months, the ball will now move to the citizens of Kenya where they will vote either Yes or no to the proposed constitution. However, the draft constitution is already facing opposition mainly from the Christian churches due to the inclusion of a contentious clause on abortion and the Kadhi courts. The clergy have promised to rally their flock to vote against it.They believe that the loophole in the section concerning abortion might lead to higher rates of abortion…Kenya's proposed constitution
- The grand coalition government and the splits in the Kenyan parliament appear to be a blessing in disguise after the members of parliament yesterday failed to pass any of the more than 100 amendments earlier proposed. neither the Party of national Unity (PNU) side nor the Orange democratic Movement (ODM) could collect the 145 votes needed to pass an amendment. If this situation persists it appears that the draft constitution will be returned to the Committee of experts without any changes. This will bring Kenyans closer to he constitution that they have awaited and yearned for for over twenty five years.Within a few months it will be up to Kenyans to either vote in favor of or against the…
