Sierra Leone supports family planning
- Posted on Thursday 6 December 2007 - 10:00Bai-Bai Sesay, AfricaNews reporter in Freetown, Sierra Leone, photo: Lindsay StarkThe Reproductive health Division in the Ministry of Health and Sanitation has started a week long Family Planning and Counseling Training Workshop at the Gender Empowerment Grassroot Conference Hall at John Street in Freetown.
The Workshop aims at familiarizing participants with update information and training materials that would address issues relating to medical criteria for use of contraceptives and their efficacy, management and side effects.
Addressing the opening ceremony, the Director of Hospitals and Laboratory Services and Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Alhaji Dr. Kisito Sheku Daoh underscored the importance of the programme in relation to Maternal and Child Health, adding that the training among other key objectives also aimed at upgrading and standardized the Family Planning counseling skills of the participants.
The quality of counseling provided by family planning service providers, Dr. Daoh said, play a vital role in what he referred to as “Family Planning up take,” and essential for informed and enlightened voluntary decision makers.
He said studies have shown that capacity building on training is often been neglected, thereby resulting to weak counseling skills on the part of the service providers.
Dr. Daoh observed that counseling training traditionally focuses on addressing the needs of new clients with too many conflicting information devoid of inter-personal communication approach.
He expressed gratitude and appreciating to the organization Action for African Women Reproductive Health (AWARE) for sponsoring the workshop hoping that participants would use the opportunity meaningfully.
Consultant and Reproductive Health Trainer UNFPA, Dr. Peter Sikana described Family planning as one of the key strategies for the reduction of Material, Morality and implored participants to conscientiously cope with the training ushered them.
The Director of Marie Stopes, Dr. Yvonne Harding spoke on the responsibility and Role of Councilors, Sister Safiatu Foday dilated on the risk assessment of Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Managing side effects and Family Planning problems by Sister Isatu Jalloh and Handling misconception, by Sister Theresa Boima
