Roadside selling keeps kids away from school

    Selling at the road side by the youth in Sogakofe, a town in the Volta Region of Ghana, has now become a threat to their education as a result of parents not being able to take care of their responsibilities. However, some of these children believe it is the only way to make money since they don't see the importance of education.

    These children, both students and school dropouts are always at the mercy of the sun and the rain as well as the adults for their earn meat as a result of the irresponsibility of parents. Madam Charlotte, who sells bread to passengers for over ten years with her 15 year old son said, the children happens to be increasing each day because most of them bear their own responsibilities.

    'I wish my son Cephas is at home learning, but because I do not have enough capacity, I forced him to come and help me’, she added.

    One of the hundreds, Nukunu, a 16 year old boy who sells ice cream and in class 5 ,with his 11 year old sister who is in class 3, selling pure water, disclose that it was their mother who asked them to come and sell.

    On the other hand, some school dropouts like Dzifa, is selling at the side of the road just to keep herself busy since she dropout from school in class 3 because she believes she was not intelligent, whiles others too are there because of teenage pregnancy. These children have no other options but to hold on to hope.
