16 September 2006, by PowerNell. This week Tanesco (Tanzania Electricity Supply Company) announced that the power rationing hours will be extended from five to seven days a week. From Monday on, electricity at daytime will be history. According to The East African "Tanzania runs the risk of being plunged into total darkness this week unless urgent measures to bring private-sector players onto the national power grid are taken". The Guardian reports, "industries and Zanzibar, hitherto unaffected by the loading schedule, would not be spared."

The Guardian cites a press statement issued by Tanesco managing director"s office: ""Industries that were hitherto exempted from load-shedding will now be included in the power rationing exercise. They will be switched off for three days in a week, on alternate days, as per rationing schedule," the statement said. According to the statement, power in industries sharing feeders with domestic consumers will be switched off on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 07:00 to 19:00 hours. "Industries with independent (dedicated) feeders that are operating 24 hour shifts will be switched off on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from 1900 to 0700 hours," the statement read in part. Tanesco attributed the growing power crisis to the recent breakdown of Songas Turbine and diminished water levels at Mtera dam, the country"s main power source."
