Zambia, perceived as one of the underdogs will this evening relive the memories of the 1994 AFCON finals in which the Super Eagles thumped the Chipolopolo Boys by two goals to one.
The Zambian capital woke up Monday with a wave of soccer fans dawned in Zambia’s national colours while the locally famous “Chipolopolo Anthem” has jammed a number of FM broadcast radio stations.
The memories of the 1994 AFCON finals are likely to be replayed this evening when the Super Eagles face Chipolopolo in the 2010 AFCON quarter-finals in Lubango this evening.
Sixteen years ago it was Nigeria who won, despite conceding an early goal scored by Elijah Litana for Zambia. But after an impressive comeback, the Super Eagles won thanks to a brace from Emanuel Amunike.
The victory marks the last time Nigeria collected the continental trophy.
Prior to their 1994 meeting, the teams had previously met in 1982 and 1990, with Zambia winning the 1982 match in Benghazi, Libya, 3-0, while Nigeria prevailed in the following showdown 2-0 in Annaba, Algeria.
