The first-ever Global Forum on Human Resources for Health held over the last three days in Kampala, Uganda called for immediate and sustained action to resolve the critical shortage of health workers around the world. - Through the Kampala Declaration and Agenda for Global Action, which lays out the essential steps that need to be taken over the next decade to turn the crisis around, the Forum mandated GHWA to monitor and evaluate progress made on the Declaration and Agenda and report back at the Second Global Forum on human resources for health, to be held in 2010. Though the past ten years have seen a threefold increase in the number of Somali girls enrolled in school, UNICEF Representative for Somalia, Christian Balslev-Olesen in Somalia says only one girl in four gets a primary education. - "This is a situation that must change rapidly because the education of girls will shape the progress we want to see for Somalia in terms of peace and development", he said Friday.
