Nairobi: Safe water thanks to solar disinfection
- Posted on Tuesday 9 March 2010 - 19:11Beryl Omunya, VoicesofAfrica mobile reporter in Nairobi, KenyaThe method known as SODIS or Solar Water Disinfection, comes as a cheap method to treat drinking water in households in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya. As the name goes this method uses sunlight radiation to destroy harmful microorganisms, which cause water borne diseases.Loading video...One is expected to fill clear water into a transparent plastic bottle, which does not exceed 3 liters, and expose it to sunlight for 1 day in clear weather and two consecutive days in cloudy weather. The sunlight kills the germs in the water and makes it safe to drink.
The method has been certified by (WHO) World Health Organization. For Kibera residents the method comes as a relief due to many challenges they used to go through earlier for instance expensive cost for fuel for boiling drinking water and lack of the extra money to buy water treatment chemicals.
This method may have its challenges but that does not worry the residents:" we might not have sunny weather all through but until the rainy weather comes we shall enjoy this cheap method to get safe drinking water" says Grace a resident who uses this method. The method has successfully been used in other parts of Kenya like Wajir in north eastern and Kisumu in Nyanza province.
