  11. Kenya: Business back as usual in Nakuru

    - Apart from the 12-hour curfew, nothing else reminds of the madness that engulfed the town of Nakuru in January. Now residents go on with their daily routine although most of the traders claim business is low. AfricaNews got to interview a tourist who has now decided to make Nakuru his home due to the beauty of the area. His action has gone a long way in showing what Kenyans are always telling foreigners, that `` the country is safe``. The western press has been accused of showing images of the violence that occurred early in January in their news clip despite a return back to normal life in nearly the whole country. This selective portrayal of the country has led to a near collapse of the t…

  15. Kenya: Parties approves inquiry into poll

    - There will be no re-run after all, the chief mediator of the Kenyan crisis talks, Koffi Annan told a news conference in Nairobi Friday. Annan said recounting of the votes cast in the DEC 27 elections would not identify the correct result and also might not further Kenyan unity. Among issues they agreed on was comprehensive reforms that touched on the constitution, electoral laws, truth and justice commission, parliamentary reform, police reform and legal and judicial reform among others. The most contentious issues among the two camps remain the structure of a coalition government which they could not agree on during a two-day camp at a luxurious resort in the Tsavo national park.See th…

  16. Kenya: A glance at pre-poll violence

    - In Kuresoi, an administrative division in Molo district, ethnic strife had started rearing its ugly head since October last year. Members of the Kikuyu - president Kibaki's tribe - and Kisii tribe were being evicted from where they lived and their houses torched. More than 100 people were killed before the December elections. Gangs of youth were incited by political leaders to chase the pro-government supporters from the area. In our short tour in December, we saw hundreds of displaced people who were camping in market centres to access relief food while most were sleeping in churches and police stations. There was little response from the government and despite police presence anarchy rul…
