Mobile video reporting recognized at UN meeting
- Posted on Monday 7 September 2009 - 11:00Olivier Nyirubugara, VoicesofAfrica, Monterrey, MexicoThe VoicesofAfrica mobile reporters and alumni have received special congratulations and encouragement from Sha Zukang, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, who was impressed by the way they allow their communities to bring out their initiatives and issues using mobile technologies. Zukang was attending the World Summit Award conference on September 2 in Monterrey, Mexico.Loading video...‘I congratulate these African people for this success. I am sure they can do better with the advancement of technology’, Zukang told Olivier Nyirubugara, a senior editorial coach of the project.
Run by Voices of Africa Media Foundation, that two-year old project won the WSA Award 2009 in the category e-inclusion and participation. VoicesofAfrica mobile reporting project strives to empower local talents by equipping them with advanced phone and the necessary knowledge to operate them. Besides, the trainees receive trainings on the basics of reporting but also on advanced matters.
This award is a third international recognition of the VoicesofAfrica: in 2007, the project was among the honorees of the Webby Award; in 2008 it won the BoB award for the best videoblog.
