Kibera youths get clean water on their own
- Posted on Monday 1 March 2010 - 18:20Beryl Omunya, VoicesofAfrica mobile reporter in Nairobi, KenyaGetting clean tap water is one of the many challenges faced by most of the people living in informal settlements in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. This is the reason why most of the organization and groups have come up with projects for providing clean water to the residents, Mizuka youth reform group is one of these groups.Loading video...They made an application to the Nairobi Water Company and they were given a tank and water connection. They now sell the water to the nearby residents at a price of 3kshs per 20 liters. The water tank is located along Kibera drive and many pedestrians also pass by to quench their thirst as they walk to their various destinations.
The project has also helped these young men from Mizuka youth group to generate income to sustain themselves. Each member has his day for selling and after a day's work part of the collection for the day is given to the member who sold the water that day and the rest is taken to the group's bank account for other development.
