Kenyans divided over local liquors
- Posted on Wednesday 18 August 2010 - 19:20Nick Fred Okoth, VoicesofAfrica mobile reporter in Migori, KenyaFollowing the decision by the Kenyan government to legalize all the local brews, varied opinions have been expressed by Migori residents on what they think of the decision.Loading video...While the decision has been met by heavy criticism from a section of the Kenyan population who believe it will turn the county into a 'drinking population', it has however been met with support from another section who believe it will open up the market and increase the hygienic conditions at the brews.
According to Levice Ochieng, a young Migori resident, the decision was long overdue since it was one of the ways the government would encourage entrepreneurship by enabling the brewers to ply their trade.
‘I believe there is nothing wrong with the government allowing people to brew the local brews’, he says adding that this will mean that the filed will open up so many people will venture into the business hence creating jobs.
According to him, the question should be mostly on the quality and the conditions under which the brews are made as well as making sure that underage children do9 not get the brews.
However, according to Evance Ouda, the decision should not have been taken since it will make more people go to the usually cheap brews at the expense of work.
‘These brews will be everywhere turning Kenya into a drinking nation’, he said adding that the government would also not be able to make sure that the conditions under which they are made is safe.
The jury is however still out on whether or not the decision was a good one and only time will tell.
