Over the last few months, the Kenyan ministry of health has embarked on a health campaign that is meant from dissuading smokers from the habit. The campaign involves large postings of warnings on tobaccos harmful effects on a consumer's health and a total ban on cigarette advertisements.

Though cigarette manufacturers have taken the battle to court, small scale traders have begun feeling the brunt as cigarette sales are said to have plummeted in the last two months. The traders say that the campaign has achieving its results as fewer people are taking up the habit and those already in it are struggling to quit.

Joram Ng'anga has noted that even amongst his regular customers, more are buying less and less cigarettes on a daily basis something which is hurting his trade. He adds that his sales have reduced by up to 50% and he feels worried, just like most of his fellow tradesmen that they will lose a way of earning a living.

Joram used to sell more than 10 packs of cigarettes in a day but he has lately been selling between three and five packs daily. He now wants the government to intervene to ensure that the big battle between them and tobacco conglomerates will not hurt the small man.
