Ghana: Water at last in Amasaman

  1. Edward Kwame Aklade VoicesofAfrica mobile reporter in Accra, Ghana
At least folks of Amasaman can now afford a smile after decades of drinking water from impure streams and lakes that flows in the town. Amasaman is the municipal capital of the Ga-west municipality a suburb in the Greater Accra region of Ghana, regrettably the district which was upgraded to the municipal status lacks basic social amenities such as regular electricity supply as well as portable drinking water defeating the purpose of its status until sometimes last year when the foundation was dug to provide them drinking water which subsequently saw its final completion in the later part of December, 2009.

This laudable initiative was powered by world vision international a non -governmental organization vis-avis the municipal authorities according to Mr.Nii the senior supervisor of the project. Before the project was launched there was free water supply close to three weeks before collecting some little fees from the community members ,water gallons was also distributed free of charge to the town folks to alert them of such vital project.

Mr.Nii added that the health of the indigenes are paramount hence they have certain measures in place such as cleaning the facility every two weeks with disinfectant, in addition water sample is taken to the laboratory frequently to be tested for the purity and drinkability. Amasaman is one of the few municipalities in Accra plagued with the buruli ulcer disease that affects the indigenes greatly because of unavailability of water.

Mr.Derick Adu Obeng could not hide his joy when the reporter interviewed him: “I have to travel all the way to a stream that serves the community members about three kilometers from the town to get water”. It was all bliss for the locals who were very appreciative to the municipal authorities as well as the world vision international for the initiative.
