Ghana: Potters faced with firewood challenges

The Association, which involves mostly the women in the community with its motto 'Feminine Touch of Excellence', has been in the existence for some years now and is facing some challenges.Loading video...Speaking in an interview with Mr. Richard Siameh, the founder and the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Association, he said the problems the association faces are poor market strategy, in the sense that, people come from the city to buy it at their own price without them determining the price. He also stated that the process of firing by using the traditional way of vegetative cover which deplete the environment has been replace with the liquefied gas but currently not in use due to lack of finance.
He said ‘the availability of the liquefied gas to replace the local way of firing using vegetative covers which eventually deplete the environment has now become a white elephant, because it not in use due to lack of finance to fill the cylinder provided’ . The men who are also into ceramics are facing similar challenges.
Annette, a member of the association and Yaw, who is into ceramics, call for help. According to history, pot making in Vume started since after the Second World War and is still in the system. This idea was introduced by some Whites who visited the town and discovered that the land was full of clay and such occupation could last for thousands of years..
