Ghana: Party elects northern regional executives

    Mr. Haruna Sulemana Tia has been elected as the new Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The event was which started at about 10am in the morning and ended around 7pm was held on Sunday the 3rd of January 2009, at the RADACH Memorial Center in Tamale.

    Popularly known as Harumbis, the 53-year-old Tamale based contractor secured 210 votes, while the incumbent, Alhassan Yakubu Adoo had 42. Four other persons contested for this position. They are Mr. Daniel Bugri Naabu, an Accra-based building contractor, who had 139 votes and Alhaji Mugisu Sibawey of the Ghana Health Service, who had 4 votes. The rest are Mr. Joseph Nongre Naa Vugu of the office of the former Chief of Staff who polled 32 votes and Alhaji Alhassan Mahmud, the immediate past Northern Regional NADMO coordinator who was consoled with a single vote.

    Alhaji Iddi Ahmed Rufai also polled 334 of the total votes cast to beat Alhaji Baba Abdulai who got 94 to win the slot of the 1st Regional Vice Chairman, while Alhassan Jato was mandated the 2nd Regional Vice Chairman (191 votes) against his close marker Alhaji Hudu Sayibu who struggled to raise 150 votes in the race of four contenders.

    Mr. Clifford Braimah the incumbent Regional Scribe retained his seat in a keenly contested polls (224 votes) after beating Sule Salifu (184 votes) who was also earlier tipped to sweep him of his position. Haruna Iddrisu, a former National Youth Employment (NYEP) Coordinator, polled 220 votes to become deputy regional secretary whiles Faisal Gbanjiri, incumbent polled 208 votes.

    In other positions Alhaji Abdul-Rashid COP son of the late Alhaji Salifu COP was massively voted (337 votes) as the party’s next regional youth organizer, Alhaji Abdallah Hindu regional organizer and Hajia Amama Sayibu women’s organizer (275). The Regional Treasurer position went to Alhaji Abukari Adam after he polled 148 votes to beat his close contender Benjamin Nana Boakye who garnered 141votes. In all, about 36 aspirants vied for the nine regional positions of the party with a delegate population of about 450 from all the 26 constituencies in the region.
    Among the national executive members of the party who were present at the congress to witness proceedings were Nana Ohene Ntow, the General Secretary of the NPP; Mr. Lord Commey, National Organiser; Madam Rita Asobayeri; National Women’s Organiser, and Alhaji Malik Yakubu Alhassan, a former MP for Yendi. The Northern Regional Police Commander, ACP A. Awuni, led the police contingent at the congress.

    Mr. Haruna Tia Sulemana said later in an interview that he’s happy to have been elected, and he believes it’s because of his track record. According to Nana Ohene Ntow, the congress was very successful. Furthermore, the excited manner party members and supporters hailed the newly elected executives prove that the incoming executives are capable of leading the NPP to victory in the 2012 national elections. The Northern regional congress is the fourth congress of the party following that of the Greater Accra, Central and Volta regions.

    Meanwhile, a shooting incident occurred at around 11.30am after the police attempted to prevent some unaccredited persons from entering the premises. The police had to fire canisters of tear gas of disperse the incensed supporters for calm to return after about 15 minutes of disorder. Two persons, including the Tamale Metropolitan Police Commander, Mr. Abanga Caesar, sustained injuries. The condition of the other victim, Issahaku Walis, who is a member of the Tamale Polytechnic students’ wing of the NPP is said to be serious. He is currently on admission at the Tamale Teaching Hospital where he is receiving treatment. However Mr. Caesar, who was wounded on his right thumb, has since been treated and discharged from the hospital.
