The interim Country Director of Oxfam Ghana Sebastian Tiah told AfricaNews they have noticed that poorer areas there are still high rate of unacceptable deaths by pregnant women.

“We need to recognize that there are couple of researches in this respect but the dynamics of it keep changing, hence, we are trying to gather all the different researches couple with very critical evidence on the ground which will then inform us as what we do as direct support and more importantly to advocate and campaign to ensure governments and other stakeholders do pay right attention in reducing maternal health,” he said.

According to him maternal mortality in Africa is not new and what usually happens is the will power and commitment by different stakeholders like governments, donor agencies, and also by citizens themselves to play their vital role.

He said the outcome of the process would go a long way to increase understanding of issues and renew commitment of different stakeholders to increase support and investment especially in very poor areas like Ghana and Africa as a whole.

On her part, the Media Officer of Oxfam France Delphine Bedel said they have partnered with others to launch the “Universal Access to Health” which is to raise awareness among French and international communities to provide adequate fund for maternal care in developing countries.
