Ghana: High absenteeism rate in schools
- Posted on Saturday 20 February 2010 - 18:42Edward Kwame Aklade VoicesofAfrica mobile reporter in Accra, GhanaRegardless of free education and provision of books as well as uniforms by Governments, folks in the rural communities care less and are indifferent whiles they continue enjoying their conventional habit of taking their wards to farm as well as other work places.Loading video...The Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) mandates all parents to take their wards to school free of charge. Parents have no room therefore but to take their wards to school under no pretext because text books and other relevant teaching learning materials are provided for by government.
The reporter can say authoritatively that such is not the case in the rural areas despite free provision of books. The reporter spent some days with the rural folks within the Medie Municipality in Accra and realized that most parents take their ward to the farm during schooling hours. The situation is even worse when there is funeral in the community. Pupils flood the funeral grounds as though the funeral was organized for them.
From interactions, at least three out of ten parents will refrain their wards from going to such functions. At Manchie in the Ga-west municipality for instance, parents indulge their wards vigorously in the gari processing business during school hours making teaching is very difficult for the teachers because they are forced to teach particular topics again when absentees return to school.
Miss Dorcas Negble absented herself consistently from school .the reporter confirmed this from the schools attendance register. When asked why, she explained that the mother said she does not have any money so she should stay behind and help her process gari in other to get some money for her to school. The reporter delicately enquired from madam Adzo, the mother of Dorcas but bluntly refused to comment and rather threatened the reporter to leave her premises. according to the teachers they have complained several times but to no avail. the reporter will go all out to get the appropriate reactions from the authorities in subsequent editions.
