Ghana: Ex-footballers take to coaching
- Posted on Tuesday 17 February 2009 - 11:22Daniel Nana Aforo, AfricaNews reporter in Accra, GhanaTwo former Ghanaian football superstars Charles Kwabena Akonnor and Nii Odartey Lamptey have been appointed as the head coach and assistant respectively for Sekondi 11 Wise, a premier side at the ongoing Glo League in Ghana.
Their appointments come as a result of a sudden resignation of the entire technical handlers of the club. The team returned to its top flight this season after a 10-year spell in the lower leagues.
Akonnor was the former captain of the senior national team the Black Stars and retired around 2002. Expectations are high from the two since fans of the club mounted pressure on the previous coach, Galaga, to resign.
Akonnor who had no coaching experience in an interview said he is committed to assist the team at the ongoing league with the support of his assistant, management and the enthusiastic supporters.
“My relationship as player with many astute coaches both home and abroad will enable me to handle the mantle although it will be difficult. With God on our side we shall triumph,” he said.
The former captain locally played for Okwahu United, Obuasi Goldfields before leaving for Europe and then became a captain for Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.
Akonnor and Lamptey both 34 years were unveiled on Monday, at the Ghana Football Association Secretariat. Currently, the team occupies the 5th position on the league table with 15 points in 10 matches.
