GSSG Mathora celebrates 49th anniversary
- Posted on Tuesday 5 February 2008 - 12:14The Government secondary school for Girls Mathora has on the 2nd February 2008 celebrated its 49th anniversary at an impressive ceremony held at the school Compound.
The occasion, which was attended by present and past pupils of the school including residents of both Mathora and Magburaka, was described as ‘First of it kind’ since its foundation on September 1958.
Addressing the congregation, the Principal Ms. Vivian Sally Senesie says this year’s ceremony has a special note of significance as it start the planning for the for next year’s bi-Centenary celebration when both old and present students are expected to evaluate their past, assess their present and make projection into the future of GSSG Mathora.
According to the Principal, the school’s administration decides to celebrate this year’s foundation day on a low key.
Ms. Vivian Senesie went further to informed the gathering that, the 2009 Bi-Centenary celebrations will be significant to all well-meaning old girls to contribute positively to the school that has made who they are.
The Principal however brought to the notice some of the constrains on the school ranged from the inability of government to pay last year’s tuition fees and this year’s first term has not been paid.
The cry for access to education for girls is on the increase. This in turn has increased the enrolment in the boarding home to five hundred and fifth (550), The expansion and provision of adequate boarding home and school facilities to name but a few adding that the school have only few beds and mattresses to housed the more than 500 girls on campus.
The current bed in the entire Boarding home according to the Principal is 245, bunk beds 37, single beds 173, Mattresses 349.
The fencing of the compound is a major concern for the security of the girls and staff in campus
The school lacks the provision of safe drinking water. Erecting an assembly hall and extension on the dinning hall to be fitted with tables and chairs to meet the growing needs of pupils in the boarding home. To equip the Home Economics department with the required equipments. Incentives to teachers who sacrifice to stay with your girls. The school bus is a liability and needs thorough maintenance if we are to continue to have it on road. For instance, we need a change of injective pump. One generation to give to the whole compound.
The school administration has endeavored to have a brand new 5 KVA diesel generator to light the compound for three hours so that the girls can study.
Meanwhile, at the end of the occasion, the school Koir group headed by a SSS III student Yarieh HQ Koroma thrilled the guests.
