Farmers under threat of high tension poles
- Posted on Wednesday 17 February 2010 - 18:28Edward Kwame Aklade VoicesofAfrica mobile reporter in Accra, GhanaDue to unavailability of farmland, vegetable farmers within the Dzorwulu metropolis a suburb in the Greater Accra region of Ghana have defied all health risks associated with staying with or close to high tension poles as they continue to farm.Loading video...According to scientist people who stay with or close to high tension poles risk getting cancer, a malignant tumor which is caused as a result of growth of cells which multiply uncontrollably destroying the healthy tissues . It is in this light that government have continued warning that all persons staying close to the high-tension poles to abandon all such site.
Mr.Mumuni Alhasan,said he inherited the land from his father some fifteen years ago and has been farming on it since, he added however that he is very much aware of the health risk associated with staying close to the high tension poles but have no other place to turn to. During an interview ,the reporter enquired from the chief farmer if they have made any attempt to evacuate the site and acquire a new site considering the danger staying close to the high-tension facility posses.
He responded that they have made such move but all attempts to acquire new site closer to them have proven unsuccessful. He added however that the new site they are hoping to acquire is far from their home and family and once they are not close to the site it will be difficult to manage the activities on the farm.
